GMRS License

A GMRS license is a legal authorization that lets you and your family use higher-power two-way radios and repeaters on GMRS frequencies in the U.S.

A GMRS license is a permit issued by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the United States that allows individuals or families to operate General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) radios.

Here’s a breakdown:

What GMRS Is

GMRS is a land-mobile radio service that operates on specific UHF frequencies (462–467 MHz).
It’s intended for short- to medium-range two-way communication, often used by families, off-road groups, emergency teams, and outdoor enthusiasts.
GMRS radios typically provide better range and more power (up to 50 watts) than license-free Family Radio Service (FRS) radios.

License Details

Who can apply: Any individual 18 years or older (not a representative of a foreign government).
Covers your whole family: The license extends to your immediate family members—spouse, children, parents, grandparents, aunts/uncles, nieces/nephews, etc.
Term: A GMRS license is valid for 10 years.
Cost: As of 2021, the FCC reduced the fee to $35 for the 10-year term.
Application: You apply through the FCC’s Universal Licensing System (ULS).

Benefits of GMRS

Higher transmit power than FRS radios.
Ability to use repeaters (which can greatly extend range).
Access to 30 GMRS channels (including those shared with FRS).

Congratulations, Newly Certified LACoFD Explorers!

On Saturday, December 20, 2025, the County of Los Angeles Fire Department (LACoFD) Explorers listed below successfully passed their evaluation of skills and physical test, earning the position of “Certified Explorer.”

Over the past 12 to 24 months, these Explorers diligently worked to complete their Task Books which included fire station familiarization, apparatus familiarization, hose and hardware, hose lays, self-contained breathing apparatus, ladders, ropes and knots, fireground operations, emergency medical services, truck operations, and wildland operations.

Additionally, many of our newly certified Explorers also successfully completed the 20-hour Community Emergency Response Team and eight-hour cardiopulmonary resuscitation training, participated in the annual Explorer drill and muster, and volunteered at numerous Department and community events.

In addition to earning their “Certified” patch, newly certified Explorers will receive additional personal protective equipment and can participate in 12-hour ride-alongs outside of their assigned division.
